Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…
Album: Expressions
Artist: Music Go Music
Released: 2009
Format(s) I own it on: Vinyl
At some point Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney/Wild Flag/Portlandia fame tweeted about a band called Music Go Music. I listened to the song, and bought the album on vinyl.
The record was pieced together from three different EPs, but works pretty well as an album.
The album is a cross between Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and Abba. It’s addictive and fun, but didn’t seem to stay much in rotation. I listened to it a lot for a couple months, and then it got filed away. That doesn’t take away from the fact that these are great dance songs.
This album is drenched in the 1970s. This album is a bit too out of time, creating a sound that does not fit with its contemporaries. The music videos that accompanied the release very obviously state that this was the goal.
They created a fake ’70s variety show called Face Time. It’s not related to the later-released Apple product. The production quality in those videos are incredible, they created a good time piece from another era. You should watch it. I’ll wait.
Highlights
“Just Me” is an absolutely phenomenal song about learning to love yourself.
“Light of Love” starts off weakly, but once it hits the chorus, it’s a great and fun dance song.
Lowlights
It’s a bit too much of the same. Other than that, it’s a damn good record.
For reference, my Being There review from December 2009.
